The Amundsen-Scott South Pole Observotary
The South Pole station is maintained and operated by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Professor Chet Gardner took this picture during his visit in November 1994. The dome at the background (52 ft high and 164 ft in diameter) shelters three main buildings which house scientific facilities, dining/kitchen areas, living quarters, etc. The University of Illinois lidar was installed in the lower and smaller building at the front.
The South Pole Lidar Station
This small building at the South Pole station houses the University of Illinois Rayleigh/Sodium
lidar. Do you see the orange University of Illinois flag on top of
the building?
